Rick Shabo

Transportation Director

Rick Shabo is our transportation director and a bus driver for the Center. Rick hails from Sitka, Alaska where he grew up. He met his wife at Sheldon Jackson Junior College, the former Sue Helms of Haines, Alaska. They have been married since 1967. They have two daughters, four grandchildren and one great grand daughter who was born in 2010.

Rick spent 35 years in the Navy SeaBees active and Reserves as well as worked for Boeing, retiring in 2011.

While in the Navy Rick spanned three wars: Vietnam, Gulf War 1, and the current Gulf War. He was laid off from Boeing in 2002 so volunteered for “Homeland Security”. When he got to San Diego he was given his desert cammies and told his unit was in Kuwait Opps. He arrived the night the war started March 2003. He was the Command Duty Officer for Naval Coastal Warfare Group One. 60% of the troops on ground were Reservists with many AARP age so he felt right at home with his age group.

Rick is degreed in Industrial Plant Maintenance which he used at Boeing in the Equipment Services Repair for the 777 and 787 airplane programs.

He and his wife have lived on the island since 2005.
